Orion Stratus 24mm Eyepiece

If you are one of the legions of folks who have “upgraded” to a big-screen television set lately, then you’ve probably become spoiled by its wonderfully expansive picture. Well, if you are a telescope user, you will be equally spoiled by the wide-field window into the heavens served up by a Stratus eyepiece. The 68° apparent field provide a 31% wider true field of view than that of a typical Plossl. Stratus eyepieces quite literally put more stars in your eyes. In the same way you feel more a part of the action watching a big-screen TV, with Stratus “sixty-eights” you will feel like you are really experiencing your celestial targets, rather than just viewing them from afar. You’ll never go back to Plössls again!

Orion Stratus 24mm eyepiece

Orion Stratus 24mm Eyepiece

But it isn’t just the Stratus’ field of view that will widen your eyes. Each ocular has a sophisticated eight-element optical configuration that features a monster 1-1/4"-diameter eye lens to look into. Each also has a generous 20mm eye relief, so you’ll get the “big picture” even if you wear eyeglasses. The optics are fully multi-coated to maximize light transmission to your eyes, and the lens edges are blackened to ensure excellent contrast.

Stratus eyepieces sport fold-down rubber eyeguards and a knobby rubber grip. The chrome barrels feature a setscrew security recess and are threaded for 1.25" filters. Each eyepiece comes with protective lens and barrel caps. Stratus eyepieces fit in both 1.25" and 2" focusers. Skies Unlimited recommends that they be used only in a 1.25" focuser or eyepiece adapter because the 2" barrel skirt is very short, rendering the grip on the eyepiece precarious at best.

Exit Pupil:
Exit pupil represents the diameter of the column of light exiting the eyepiece. Magnification is simply the ratio of telescope aperture to exit pupil. Fox example, using a telescope with 100mm aperture and an exit pupil of 2mm yields a magnification of 50X.

There are both upper and lower limits to the useful range of exit pupils. The typical human eye pupil dilates to a maximum of 7mm when fully dark adapted. This figure decreases with age. Using an exit pupil that is larger than this upper limit simply spills the light onto an area of the eye not capable of receiving data. At the opposite end of the range, a smaller exit pupil means less area on the eye is collecting data. Images brightness decreases with decreasing exit pupil. Deep space objects grow dimmer rapidly as the exit pupil falls below 1 mm. The planets also start to become noticeably dimmer when the exit pupil falls much below 0.5 mm.

Our eyepiece calculator provides warnings and error messages based upon the value of the exit pupil. These are intended to be guidelines as opposed to hard rules. There is no harm in violating these gidelines, but your enjoyment of the telescope may be diminished if you do.
