Barlow Lenses and Tele-extenders
Barlow lenses are used in series with the other optics of a system to increase the overall focal ratio of the system. In astronomical applications the Barlow lens is placed between the focuser and the eyepiece. The net effect is to increase magnification. Barlow lenses are commonly labeled by the amount of magnification they induce. 2X and 3X Barlows are the most common, but others are also available.
Barlow lenses offer an economical means to extend an eyepiece collection, but they do have some performance limitations when used with long focal length eyepieces or for imaging. Barlow lenses increase the eye relief of any eyepiece, which can be problemativ with eyepieces that already have a substantially long eye relief. Barlow lenses also move the focal plane for imaging applications. We recommend the TeleVue Powermate for imaging applications.
