Red Flashlights and Laser Pointers
Red flashlights are used to read star charts without affecting your night vision. The subdued red light allows you to see but does not cause your pupils to constrict. Allowing your eyes to fully dark adapt greatly enhances your ability to see detail in faint objects. Red flashlights are a requirement at all organized star parties, but you should really use one any time you observe in order to preserve the dark adaptation of your eyes. Don't be the one to turn on a white light at a star party - the other guests won't be too happy with you!
Laser pointers are an educational tool used to point out the location of constellations or individual objects in the night sky. The laser beam illuminates dust particles and humidity along its path, creating the illusion of a light beam projecting to infinity. The laser pointers sold here are powerful and should not be confused with the type used for indoor presentations. These laser pointers are not toys and should not be placed in the hands of a child or anyone acting like one. Laser pointers are generally not welcome at dark sky sites where people may be imaging.
