Guiding Reticle Eyepieces
Guiding reticle eyepieces were originally designed for manually guiding a telescope during long exposure astrophotography. This application has all but given way to the modern autoguider. Today they are often used for training the Periodic Error Correction (PEC) of more advanced mounts. Another common application is testing the accuracy of polar alignment using the drift method.
Reticle eyepieces are also useful achieving a more precise go-to alignment. The dual cross-hair central box provided in the Orion 12.5mm Illuminated Plossl (shown at right) will allow you to center the alignment stars with greater ease and consistency than may be possible with a standard eyepiece.
